How to Make Thai Iced Tea at Home (Better Than Takeout)
Thai iced tea (cha yen) is one of the world's most satisfying cold drinks β bold, spiced, creamy, and impossibly orange. The good news? Making it at home is easier than you think, and the result is far better than most restaurant versions once you use quality ingredients. Here's the complete recipe.
What Makes Thai Iced Tea Taste Like Thai Iced Tea?
Traditional Thai tea uses a specific blend of strong black tea β often Ceylon or Assam β with star anise, tamarind, and sometimes vanilla or cardamom. The tea is brewed very strong, sweetened while hot, then poured over ice and topped with condensed milk or evaporated milk. That orange color traditionally comes from food coloring in pre-mixed Thai tea blends, though homemade versions without dye taste just as good.
Thai Iced Tea Recipe
Ingredients (serves 2)
- 2 tsp of our Thai Tails & Trails loose leaf blend (or any strong black tea with star anise)
- 8 oz boiling water (for concentrate)
- 3β4 tbsp sweetened condensed milk (or coconut condensed milk for vegan)
- 2 tbsp evaporated milk or oat creamer (for the creamy top layer)
- 2 glasses packed full of ice
- Optional: 1 tbsp simple syrup or honey if you want extra sweetness
Instructions
- Brew strong concentrate: Steep 2 tsp of tea in 8 oz boiling water for 5 minutes. You want it very strong β almost double the normal strength.
- Sweeten hot: Add condensed milk while the tea is still hot and stir until dissolved. This is key β the sweetener emulsifies much better in hot tea.
- Cool slightly: Let the concentrate cool for 5β10 minutes (it doesn't need to be cold β just not scalding).
- Pour over ice: Fill two glasses with ice, then pour the sweetened concentrate over it. The ice will cool it instantly.
- Top with milk: Slowly pour 1 tbsp evaporated milk or oat creamer over the back of a spoon to create a beautiful floating layer on top. This gives you the classic layered look.
- Stir before drinking to combine the creamy milk layer with the spiced tea base.
Tips for the Best Thai Iced Tea
- Brew double-strength: The ice will dilute the tea β always brew stronger than you think you need
- Use full-fat condensed milk: Low-fat versions change the texture and flavor significantly
- Large ice cubes melt slower: Fewer dilution issues compared to crushed ice
- Make a big batch: The concentrate keeps in the fridge for 3 days β great for meal prep
- Vegan version: Use coconut condensed milk + oat creamer β equally delicious
